Get your Charleston on! Weekly Events: June 26 – July 1

In a city like Charleston, there’s always something fun to do. This week is no exception. From a Bahamian inspired event, to summer series kickoffs to the start of the 4th of July celebrations, there’s something for everyone. Here’s what you can get into this week!

Starlight Cinema Series at Freshfields Village

Wednesday, June 28

Bring a blanket, a chair and your family for this kickoff to the summer movie series at Freshfields on Kiawah. Every Wednesday through July 26 will feature a new family-friendly movie starting at 8:30. The best part? It’s free! 

 

This week’s movie is Disney and Pixar’s Luca, a coming-of-age story about a young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, Alberto, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface. This movie runs about 101 minutes and is rated PG.

Charleston Carifest

Thursday, June 29 – Saturday, July 1

This annual event highlights one Caribbean country each year in honor of Caribbean American Heritage Month. This time around, it’s the Bahamas. 

 

Events kick off Thursday night, June 29 at the Beatty Centre at College of Charleston with a free symposium highighting pivotal milestones in the history of the Bahamas and its historical ties to South Carolina. Symposium runs 6-9 p.m. 

 

On Friday, head to Founders Hall at Charles Towne Landing and make sure you dress all in white! It’s the All White FÊtÊ! Tickets are $80 for a single and $150 for a couple. Event runs 6-11 p.m. and includes welcome cocktails, hors d’oeurves and a cash bar. 

 

Saturday is the main event – carnival day! Brittlebank Park will be bumping with events for the whole family from 3-11 p.m. Enjoy the Kiddie Zone, Junkanoo hat making, pineapple eating contest, arts & crafts, jump castle and a Bahamas straw basket making demonstration. A parade kicks off at 4 pm. and runs from John Street to King, Congress, Hagood, Lockwood and into Brittlebank Park. It’s sure to be jam-packed with colorful costume-clad dancers moving to Caribbean music of Reggae and Soca. Stick around all evening for dancing with the Carnival Mas Bands, DJs, live performers,
special performances by the Bahamas Cultural Troupe,
Carnival Marketplace, and vendors with authentic Caribbean food.

Music on the Green with Tru Sol

Friday, June 30

Head to Freshfields Village on Kiawah for their weekly Music on the Green Concert Series on from 6-9 p.m. The free, family friendly concerts featuring a variety of music from regional bands including Carolina beach music, Motown, Top 40, country and more! This week’s performance is from Tru Sol.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs

Party at the Point

Friday, June 30

Charleston’s favorite Happy Hour Concert Series is a great way to end your week. This week get ready to Rock the 90s! This family-friendly event is beachfront at the Charleston Harbor Resort and features live music and great food and drinks. Adults are $10, kids 12 and under are free! Be sure to leave the outside food, drinks and pups at home. Make sure to bring a blanket or beach chair. This event is rain or shine.

Free Independence Day Concert at The Joe

Friday, June 30

The City of Charleston and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra are teaming up once again for a celebration of the arts with a special free Independence Day concert at “The Joe” – home of the Charleston RiverDogs. Enjoy a beautiful evening under the stars with a live performance of patriotic melodies, cherished classical favorites and a spectacular fireworks show.  Gates open at 6 p.m. The event is free to attend but tickets must be reserved ahead of time. Food and drinks will be available to purchase.

Charleston Battery Fireworks & Summer Nights

Friday, June 30

Check out the Charleston Battery as they take on Loudoun United at 7:30 p.m. Enjoy $3 beers and then stick around after the match and celebrate the 4th of July early with a fireworks display.
